Welcome to Friends of Engine Lonning

Engine Lonning is a Nature Reserve only a short distance from Carlisle City Centre. Numerous paths and trails weave around the woodland and grassland habitats, making it a perfect place for getting away from it all for an hour or so.

But beneath the undergrowth and behind the trailing ivy, Engine Lonning hides a past that couldn’t be any more different than it is today. Engine Lonning was once a bustling rail yard that had huge significance in the prosperity and growth of Carlisle.  Look closely as you walk around Engine Lonning today and you will see many clues that hint to this industrial past

Carlisle City Council and Groundwork NE & Cumbria.
We are launching an exciting and ambitious project at Engine Lonning. The project is dedicated to restoring and preserving the railway and industrial heritage of Engine Lonning before it is lost, whilst also raising awareness of its past, present and future.

Our first step in this project is to create a Friends of Engine Lonning. If you are interested in joining this group, please complete our enquiry form, or contact us for more information.
